I really try my best, but some games do feel that they go wayyy beyond board having to explore every single game mechanic just to get a challenge done. Im sure ill stir the ire of the "you should play however you want" crowd- but please, as a respect to all the hard-working devs and designers out there, please give games a chance to give you their intended emergent experience before spoiling it with a guide on a first playthrough. Theyre designed to be explored, attempted, failed, learned from, and attempted again until you breakthrough. Ive heard people say "Fromsoft games are 'designed' to be played with a guide.".

Well-designed games are designed to facilitate your experience in a thoughtfully curated way. No matter how non-averse you are to getting things spoiled, a game's moments, accomplishments, and discoveries are NEVER as fun if you didnt even attempt to find them on your own before just letting a guide lead you right to it. Guides are cool mementos of games you've already finished, and they can extend the life of a game that you're just about ready to shelve after finding everything you could through your own exploration.īut man, what a waste of an experience to just follow a guide as you play through a game for the first time. So what's the general consensus here? Go in blind the first time around, using a guide for a second playthrough to tie up loose ends and collectibles, no guide at all, or does anyone follow a guide word for word? I would really love to hear others experience of this. I'm not one for puzzles, so if I start to feel very frustrated after trying something a few times, it's very handy that you can look up the solution or at least get some clues to help you out along the way. Similarly with the likes of the Resident Evil series. I can't even express how many times I've gotten the chance to experience something I otherwise wouldn't have through this dude.

Special shout-out to the likes of TheRadBrad here. Again, maybe it comes down to enjoying older games and waiting a while after release to pick up something new, but I do love a good Let's Play. However from what I've seen, even the mention of using a guide in some game specific subs is treated like sacrilege. Following a guide word for word would really go against the idea of exploration and revisiting areas, but at the same time, when playing through DS1 - DS3 I had a brief glance at a few walkthroughs to give me a general idea of where to go next. When it comes to new releases, I can understand people not wanting to follow a guide or at the very least, being apprehensive to follow one due to spoilers. Sometimes you really need to experience things for yourself blind, if even just the first time around. Really interesting to read through, filled with some really great level maps for reference, but I think to play any of the games following the guide word for word would just bore me to tears. Great example of this is the older Metal Gear Solid guides. But to follow a guide word for word? I think I would just get bored or burnt out. I have every Final Fantasy guide from VII right up to XVI and they're some of my most prized possessions. With physical guides, say from the likes of Piggyback or Bradygames, it's more for collection purposes than anything else. Now don't get me wrong, it's very rare that I'll follow a guide word for word. Maybe it has a lot to do with playing older games, but I love a good Strategy guide, Walkthrough and especially let's plays. For me personally, I think it depends on the game / genre. Have seen similar posts in other subs and the answer always seems to be resoundingly negative. I've been thinking about this a lot lately.
